Practicing Good Dental Hygiene During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Chances are that your dental office is closed at the moment. Chances are, someone in your family has had to postpone a routine checkup or will have to postpone one in the near future. The COVID-19 pandemic has turned our world upside down and made the most mundane and normal things, like going to the dentist, near impossible, or just impractical at this time.

Follow typical hygiene tips and keep dental health at the forefront of your mind while you shelter in place!

Control what you can when things feel out of control.

There are many things outside of our control now, and to be frank, there is not much we can do about those things. But what we can do is make sure we are staying as healthy as possible so we come out strong on the other side.

While rules slack and many people stay home, proper dental hygiene must be maintained. Brushing twice a day and flossing regularly is just as important as ever. It may be even more important now since people are unable to go to their dentist for routine care and cleanings.

When it comes to personal hygiene, keeping a daily routine is key.

Whether it’s brushing your teeth or taking a shower, your hygiene is still vitally important during these times. Make sure you are following a strict brushing and flossing routine to reduce the chances of cavity buildup or tooth decay.

Help your children through their hygiene practices.

It is easy to let the reigns slip on kids when their routines have been thrown off track. It is also easy to start skipping routine brushing. Stay on top of them and help younger children by spending time teaching them how to properly brush and floss. Remind them of the importance of proper dental care and that the dentist will be so proud of them when he or she sees them again!

Consider swapping your toothbrush

Now is the perfect time to try out that electric toothbrush you have been thinking about. Brushing with an electric toothbrush for two minutes at a time is shown to offer the highest level of oral hygiene, which is crucial during a time when you are not able to see your dentist routinely.

Also, keeping your toothbrush clean and in a sanitary condition is important for keeping bad bacteria from building up and affecting your oral hygiene.

Additional options for a cleaner routine

Using a non-alcohol-based mouthwash is important during this time as well. Using this once or twice a day can help you reduce plaque buildup and prevent gingivitis from settling in.

Additionally, it is important not to use any mouthwash or toothpaste that is meant to kill oral bacteria during this time. While that may sound contradictory, your oral microbiome is a crucial component of your immune system and you need that healthy oral bacteria to help you defend your body.
